FOUR CASE STUDIES

We accept four to six residential or adaptive reuse commissions per year across and the Texas Hill Country. Each study below documents site topography, envelope assembly, and interior daylighting.

01 RESIDENTIAL NEW BUILD

Barton Creek Ridge House

Anchored into a 14-degree karst limestone incline above Barton Creek, two cast-in-place board-formed concrete pavilions bridge a seasonal wet-weather draw. Deep 11-foot steel roof cantilevers eliminate harsh western glare before it reaches the low-iron glazing, keeping interior ambient light diffuse and cool through August.

02 ADAPTIVE REUSE

East Sixth Icehouse Conversion

A 1948 masonry cold-storage warehouse stripped back to its structural steel bowstring trusses and load-bearing brick shell. We inserted an acoustically isolated timber courtyard residence and private gallery within the unconditioned perimeter wall, turning a dense urban arterial block into an inward-facing sanctuary.

03 RURAL HOMESTEAD

Pedernales Limestone Compound

Configured as three narrow single-room-deep dogtrot volumes around an ancient live oak grove, this off-grid capable residence harvests 100% of its potable water from standing-seam tern-metal roofs into a 40,000-gallon buried concrete cistern beneath the entry plinth.

04 INFILL RESIDENCE

Tarrytown Courtyard Monolith

On a constrained 65-by-130-foot urban parcel bordered by two-story neighbors, the house presents a windowless hand-troweled lime-plaster facade to the street. Inside, four interlocking gardens bring north zenithal light deep into the subterranean library and primary bathing suite.

DETAIL D-14 — COMPOSITE MONOLITHIC WALL ASSEMBLY TARGET R-34 EFFECTIVE ENVELOPE

Central Texas demands an architecture that confronts 105-degree summers, flash-flood hydrology, and intense ultraviolet exposure without sacrificing openness. We do not treat interiors as cosmetic surface decoration applied after engineering; structure and room finish are the exact same material.

By pairing thermally broken steel fenestration with high-mass limestone and concrete walls, our residences age with minimal maintenance and silence exterior urban or highway noise.

SPECIFICATION / 01

SOLAR & DAYLIGHT CALIBRATION

Every project undergoes equinox and solstice heliodon modeling during schematic design, sizing overhangs to block direct summer gain from May through September while welcoming low winter sun.

SPECIFICATION / 02

HONEST MATERIAL PATINA

We specify unlacquered architectural bronze, quarry-run Texas Lueders stone, quarter-sawn white oak, and mineral lime plaster—materials that deepen in character rather than requiring replacement.

SPECIFICATION / 03

INTEGRATED MILLWORK & SYSTEMS

Linear slot diffusers, acoustic baffling, automated shading pockets, and structural columns are resolved within a 1/16-inch cabinetmaker tolerance before foundation concrete is poured.

04 / COMPLETE ARCHIVE LEDGER

Selected Commission Index & Site Feasibility

Before committing to full architectural design, many clients engage Vantage & Vale for a three-week Site Strategy & Feasibility Study to evaluate impervious cover, heritage oak root zones, and construction budgets.
